With the current economy and jobs being cut or cutback, you may have made the decision to start an online business.  Excellent!  Now you must decide which company or opportunity you are going to join.  There are hundreds to choose from.  You can break them down into three main categories: Affiliate marketing, network marketing (multi-level marketing) and Direct sales.  Now lets look a little closer at each one

  1. Affiliate marketing is the simplest and easiest online business to get into.  You can literally be up and running in 15 minutes.  There is no product inventory.  Affiliate marketing is an online business where the affiliate is paid for every sale that is made through their website or link.  Your time and cost is devoted to driving traffic to your link for the particular product and wait for the end user to select something and buy it.  If the user buys, you get paid; if they don’t then you don’t.  Requirements for this type of business are an Entrepreneur spirit & some creativity.  Someone who has a vision for the business and ideas and dedication to stick to it.  The better you are at driving traffic to your website the more money you will make.  You become an expert marketer because you will discover all the ways that work in driving traffic to a website. The cost of the marketing and a value of your time are the expenses that you will need to cover.  There companies that host affiliated companies two of the largest are: Clickbank and Commission Junction.  You can sign-up with affiliate programs at these site and they handle the sale process and collect your commission after a sale. Entry cost $0.00; marketing cost varies as needed to drive traffic budget $50 to $500 per month to start.
  2. Network Marketing (MLM) has gotten a bad reputation over the years. Mainly because it has such a high failure rate (97%).  It has a high failure rate because the attitude and discipline of the people who join MLM opportunities.  Many people join MLM businesses thinking they can get quick riches with little work (partly because claims from others trying to sign them up).  Just like any business it takes dedication, time and money to get it going.  The more you treat the MLM opportunity like a business the more successful you will be.  How you talk to yourself can hold you back from taking the steps you need to take in order to succeed.  You can’t doubt or be afraid of your opportunity and proclaim with confidence to attract anyone.  Traditional marketing for a MLM was one person at a time or group meetings.  In recent years Top Producers have been leveraging the Internet to increase their business.  It will come down to two main ideas: Training & Persistent/Consistent Action.  You need training to learn and develop the skills needed for success.  That includes both online and offline prospecting.  Once you start implementing your training with persistent/consistent action you will succeed.
  3. Direct Sales are products that need some kind of explanation or education.  Examples of direct sale items are vitamins, candles sold in house parties (Partylite), or cosmetics (Mary Kay Cosmetics).  You actual have a business with inventory and direct sale pitches to consumers.  You are actually building a traditional business by search for customers to purchase and use your products.  You can move this to an ebusiness but you need support from the main company.  This approach will take more effort, to build a clientele, and money to have an adequate inventory for your clients. You will look for referrals from past customer and friends to build your business as well as using strategies of traditional retail store outlets (ads, sales and coupons).

So now you have a basic framework to perform your search for the type of business you want to start.  Start with how much time, money and effort you have to devote to your new online business.  Once you have made those decisions your research will be more focused.  So go hit the Internet and start doing your research, good luck.
