It is hard to go through a day on the Internet without hearing or seeing a reference to Twitter. Twitter is a social media service that connects people world wide through 140 characters called tweets. It has been referred to as micro-blogging. You will find everything on twitter from the mundane, someone washing his or her hair, to the very useful, information on any subject. Should you be using Twitter and how should you?
There are estimates, Twitter is a private held company and does not release
information, that there are over 26 million Twitter users, called tweeps. All these users are connected and share information 140 characters at a time, called tweets. Twitter is a place to hang out and talk about anything. It is true that most is nonsense. But Twitter gives you a chance to brand yourself. Your connections on Twitter are called followers, those are people who have chosen to follow (or see) your tweets. You can follow others meaning you see their tweets. Obviously you want loads of followers all watching what you say or tweet. The best approach is balance, though. You want to balance the number of followers and those that you follow. Number one it keeps you out of the category of spammer and number two it builds good relationships when others on Twitter see that you are interested in other tweeps as well as having tweeps interested in you.
You communicate on Twitter in two forms. One is through your tweets. The other is through your profile. People become aware of you through various services and the first place they will look is your profile. This is a 140-character description of you, your business and what you are like. The very first impact on profile is the picture. If you don’t have one on your profile, stop reading now and good and upload one. This is as much your brand as anything else. I have made decisions to follow someone based on their picture alone. The description part of your profile can be as varied as the Internet. You want people to get a quick sense of who and what you are. Provide a link to your primary business and a little history of who you are.
The Twitter community is a giving one but you must be patient. As with anything in Social Media you need to offer value first. You can establish yourself as an expert by offering information to your followers, but it must be useful content. Do not expect to gain many followers by joining Twitter and immediately begin blasting your marketing messages every chance you get. No one will care and you will alienate the small amount of followers that you have. Twitter is an investment in your time to do it right. You deliver content and add followers. The two go hand in hand. As you provide more useful information it will be retweeted (RT) to your followers’ network and people see that and follow it back to you and begin following you.
Twitter is a great place to announce blog posts, special events, and ask for advice and information. Your tweets form a picture of you that you want to reinforce your profile. You should search out others with the same profile. You have something in common. Twitter is just too big a community to ignore, but you need to take it slow and build your followers. Focus on good content (giving) than your opportunity (receiving) and you will build a large community of followers.
